Verbs followed by a gerund or to + [infinitive] - different meaning

As if this was not enough: Another bunch of these tend to mean something different in each structure. Look here:

They saw the old lady in the street and stopped talking.

This means the old lady is probably one of those treasure troves of gossip and they don't want her to hear anything. So they stop their conversation. However, a little grammatical variation changes this situation completely. In the to + [infinitive] construction

They saw the old lady in the street and stopped to talk.

the old hag is transformed into a nice granny they want to have a chat with. So stopped to talk means they stopped whatever they were doing (in this case: walking) in order to talk. Got it?
